Our
Center is the oldest active yoga studio in South Florida. The Yoga
Center in Deerfield began 35 years ago by a young yogini, Gail Teichmann.
Dotty Zevin, RYT, became the
Director 20 years ago. Today the Yoga Center is a place teeming with
different kinds of yoga classes for every day of the week. Day and
night classes include Hatha Yoga, Flow Yoga, Restorative / Therapeutic,
Stress Reduction, Gentle, Beginners, Yoga for Balance and Strength,
Jivamukti and Feldenkrais.
Our teachers come from all different backgrounds of yoga. All are
Registered Yoga Teachers with Yoga Alliance. The touchstone of the
Yoga Center is the Teacher Training Program. JoAnn Evans, RYT (500
hours) has been the Director of Teacher Training since 1988. The program
begins every September.
As
stated in the June 2004 Enlightened Practice by staff writer, Silvana
Soleri: The Yoga Center of Deerfield Beach is more than a yoga studio
- it is a historical landmark of our South Florida yoga community.
It is a treasure trove of experience, devotion, and integrity in the
life and practice of the yogic path.

After experiencing many styles of yoga and its philosophy from a variety of teachers including Deepak Chopra, she acquired her European certification in London, England but did not intend to teach as she was at the peak of her career. After moving to Florida seven years ago, she felt the call receiving her American certification as an Instructor in the Science of Yoga, also holding certificates in Reiki, Silver Sneakers Chair Yoga and Yoga specifically for people with MS. She has added her own personal mark to a combination class called Yoga Fusion; a Hatha based practice that begins and closes with a guided relaxation and specific breath work carried through most of the 1 1/2 hour class. Using props such as belts, bolsters, bricks, pillows etc. to help align the body to enable it to gently move deeper into the asana (pose) gaining a better understanding of the postures. When appropriate, a touch of Kundalini is used to awaken energy and once a month we do a Vinyasa style flowing yoga, always moving slowly. "Maybe that's why turtles live for so long." Detailed instructions and corrections are given. Private lessons also available. Please contact The Yoga Center or Sabah directly at 954 566-6219. |
